Description

Hybrid event: online via Microsoft Teams and in-person at Tigard Library

Minimum age: None; under 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian

This hybrid event will be disability-centered and give volunteers an opportunity to both learn about the History of Civil Rights for disabled people and to join together in researching topics and making buttons and coloring sheets to celebrate Disability Pride Month.  All supplies will be provided.  Although the Oregon Health Authority no longer requires the use of masks, to be inclusive of high-risk individuals, we will offer for voluntary usage to those attending in-person a free KN95 respirator (mask) to wear during the event and a COVID-19 at-home test kit. Test and respirator will be available to pick up at the library up to 2 weeks in advance and at the time of the event.

Once you are registered to volunteer at the event, a coordinator will contact you directly to confirm if you are attending in-person or online, if you need any accommodations, and to make arrangements to pick up the mask and tests if needed.

Online activities will give participants the chance to prepare their own material to celebrate Disability Pride Month in July 2025. This will consist of researching facts about Disability Rights and Services that people can share with their friends and family, creating social media content that can be posted on personal accounts such as pages that link to local resources, a thread that lists facts about disability history, or designing images using digital tools to create disability-themed art. As part of the event, we will provide the communal space on Teams for us to gather, share information, and have conversation, but participants will need to provide any digital tools they need for social media or art-making.

In-person activities will include making items that are disability-themed, some of which will be passed out at the Library during Disability Pride in July 2025. You’ll have the opportunity to design a personal button to take home, as well as cut out and build pre-designed buttons. Library visitors, including children, love to pick up coloring sheets from the Library so you can also create a disability pride coloring sheet template that that can be passed out along with the buttons. We will also have supplies for you to draw, color, or collage art that you can hang in your window, your car, or gift to others during Disability Pride.
